There is a Jeep Model and 4×4 System to Meet Any Need
How are Jeep 4×4 Systems Different?
Jeep vehicles were the first out-of-the-box off-road-ready platforms ever built, starting with the original Willys model popularized in World War II, all the way to the most modern Jeep crossover SUV that a buyer might find at Finch Chrysler. The current Jeep roster is filled with options to meet almost any need. At the same time, others like the Grand Cherokee can rival traditional luxury models in terms of available features and options. Still, it can also perform on less-than-perfect road conditions as a Jeep should. All Jeep models offer four-wheel-drive, but how are Jeep 4×4 systems different? Let’s take a closer look at your available options.

Jeep 4×4 Options by Model for any Terrain
Drivers face a lot of challenges when they’re out on the road. Jeep has built its lineup to handle just about anything someone is likely to encounter including mud, gravel, snow, rocks, and, of course, pavement. A Jeep four-wheel-drive system gives its driver the confidence to take their vehicle almost anywhere it needs to go.
There are a lot of reasons why Jeep models are ready for anything. Jeep engineers have paid close attention to potential problems at the most basic level before the vehicle ever leaves the factory. Jeep vehicles have fully enclosed electrical systems to keep water out of where it shouldn’t be and offer steel skid plates to protect sensitive underbody components. And Jeep makes rock rails available to add protection from hazards that might not be easy to see.
Grand Cherokee 4×4 Systems
Quadra-Drive® II System with Rear Electric Limited-Slip Differential
This is the top-of-the-line four-wheel-drive system offered with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The electronically controlled limited-slip differential is what sets this system apart from the others. Up to 100 percent of available torque can be sent to a single rear wheel if it’s needed to get the vehicle moving again.
Quadra-Trac I® 4×4 System
Things can happen quickly when out on the road. Jeep has found that the best four-wheel-drive system is one that can be employed automatically. The Quadra-Trac® I 4×4 System is always working in the background and ready to help drivers demonstrate confidence driving on almost any road conditions.
Quadra-Trac II® 4×4 System
A driver-selectable traction management feature is the crucial difference between the Quadra-Trac II® 4×4 System versus the Quadra-Trac I® 4×4 System. Also, Quadra-Trac II® 4×4 System employs a two-speed low-gear transfer case that takes in various inputs from sensors to detect a slipping tire before it happens. Additionally, the Traction Management System can change some vehicle settings to handle snow, sand/mud, rocks or sport driving.
Quadra-Trac® SRT® 4×4 System
High-performance Jeep platforms require high-performance Jeep four-wheel-drive systems. The Grand Cherokee SRT® and Trackhawk trim grades use the Quadra-Trac® SRT® 4×4 System to manage all of the power produced by these unique models to interact with the road surface. An electric limited-slip differential joins a very large mechanical wet clutch to provide the models’ four-wheel-drive capability. The driver can fine-tune settings through the Selec-Track® System.

Wrangler 4×4 Systems
Command-Trac® 4×4 System
People expect their Jeep Wrangler to be able to take them almost anywhere they want to go. The Command-Trac® 4×4 System offers a transfer case that is smooth and quiet without sacrificing capability. Buyers looking for a wide range of on- and off-road capabilities will want to check out Wrangler trims equipped with the Command-Trac® system.
Rock-Trac® 4×4 System
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is arguably the most capable version of the off-road-ready platform. A Wrangler Rubicon owner with the Rock-Trac® 4×4 System will have more control and more torque distribution for better off-road performance than the nearest competitor. A 4:1 low-gear ratio allows for slower crawl speeds across the more unforgiving surfaces.

Cherokee 4×4 Systems
Jeep® Active Drive I 4×4 System
An owner of the Jeep Cherokee might not be tackling the most demanding off-road trails, but that isn’t to say they don’t face their own challenges. The Jeep® Active Drive I 4×4 System is always running and ready to go to work. Drivers will have more than enough peace of mind knowing they will be able to keep the Cherokee safely under control on roads that are wet, covered by mud, heavy snow or gravel.
Jeep® Active Drive II 4×4 System
Like any good sequel, the Jeep® Active Drive II 4×4 System offers the best parts of the original iteration of the technology but also adds low-range and neutral modes for additional capabilities. The 4×4 low-range mode provides more traction at low speeds, and the neutral mode makes it safer to tow the Cherokee behind a larger vehicle, like an RV.

Jeep® Active Drive Lock 4×4 System
The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk® features the Jeep® Active Drive Lock 4×4 System as standard equipment. It offers all of the capabilities available with the Jeep® Active Drive II 4×4 System, as well as a mechanical rear axle lock and the Jeep-exclusive Selec-Terrain® Traction Management Rock mode.

Compass/Renegade 4×4 Systems
While the Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade are distinctly different vehicle platforms, the two models are equipped with the same four-wheel-drive systems.
Jeep® Active Drive 4×4 System
A Compass or Renegade with the Jeep® Active Drive 4×4 System will be able to confidently engage with almost any kind of road environment while also maintaining strong fuel economy scores. The key to the two Jeep models’ efficiency is that both will be able to cruise on the road with front-wheel-drive, but they can each quickly transition to four-wheel-drive when required. Selec-Terrain® Traction Management is available on the Compass and Renegade.
Jeep® Active Drive Low 4×4 System
The Trailhawk® versions of the Compass or Renegade employ the Jeep® Active Drive Low 4×4 System. A vehicle with this four-wheel-drive system will have everything found with the Jeep® Active Drive 4×4 System, but it will add a 20:1 crawl ratio and low-range gearing to meet the needs of advanced off-road drivers.
