Dashboard Warning Lights Explained
Below, we’ve explained the meanings behind some of the most common dashboard warning lights, with the numbers corresponding to the photo above.
- Anti-Locking Braking System Light – If Illuminated while you’re driving, a malfunction is indicated in the braking system.
- Brake Fluid Warning Light – This light could begin showing up for a number of reasons with the most likely of the bunch being a low brake fluid level. You should stop when it’s safe to do so, consult your owner’s manual to locate the brake fluid reservoir and top it off with the correct brake fluid. This should result in the brake warning light going out. If the brake system warning light remains on, it could be indicating that there’s a brake fluid leak.
- High Beam Light – Illuminates when the high beam headlamps have been switched on.
- Low Fuel Notification Light – This light comes up when your fuel level gets very low and refuelling becomes necessary.
- Washer Fluid Indicator Light – Illuminates when the fuel level is low, or the fuel tank is nearly empty. Refuel as soon as possible.
- Open Door Indicator Light – This symbol is turned ON, when the driver starts the car and one or more doors are not closed properly. When all doors have been shut, this icon will turn OFF.
- Parking Brake Light – The Parking Brake light should turn ON when you engage the brake, and turn OFF when the brake is disengaged. If the Parking Brake light stays on, however, there may be an issue with the system.
- Oil Warning Light – This icon will illuminate when your oil temperature gets too high or the oil level or pressure is lower than recommended. The vehicle’s engine should be stopped immediately at this moment to avoid severe damage to the engine.
- Low Beam Light – When lit up, the Low Beam icon indicates that your low beam headlights are switched ON.
- Engine Temperature Warning Light – Illuminates when the engine coolant temperature is high. Stop the vehicle as soon as possible, switch off the engine, and let it cool.
- Direction Indicator Lights – When glowing, this icon reminds you that your direction indicator lamps or turn signals are on.
- Check Engine Light – Your check engine light could appear for a number of reasons, including a cracked or loose gas cap (which causes fuel to evaporate), or a more serious issue like low oil pressure or overheating.
- Fog Lamp Indicator Light – Illuminates once you have switched the front fog lamps on.
- Battery Alert Light – If Illuminated while driving, a malfunction is indicated. Switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment, and have our Finch CDJR service centre in London, ON check the condition of your battery.
- Seatbelt Reminder Light – This light simply reminds you or your passenger to fasten your seatbelts. It is typically accompanied by a repetitive dinging noise.
