Chrysler takes Grand Caravan minivan from Dodge
Why did the Grand Caravan go from Dodge to Chrysler?
The global automotive industry is extraordinarily complex and constantly shifting to meet customers’ demands, which is true of any manufacturer. News about the Dodge side of the Stellantis operation dropping its flagship Grand Caravan minivan first dropped in early 2020. However, additional information has more recently come to light about a resurrection of sorts. Potential buyers interested in what the Grand Caravan has to offer can find the nameplate again, just under a different manufacturer’s umbrella. So, why did the Grand Caravan go from Dodge to Chrysler? Basically, because it was a popular model that has earned the trust of a lot of families. Is the Grand Caravan replacing other Chrysler minivans in Canada?
Chrysler released the Voyager minivan after the top brass at Dodge decided to shutter production of the Grand Caravan in the United States. However, Chrysler didn’t want to lose any goodwill among Canadian minivan buyers and chose to pick up with the Grand Caravan, where Dodge decided to stop.
A July 2020 post on the Car and Driver website quotes an unnamed FCA (now Stellantis) spokesperson as saying:
“Particularly for Canadian consumers, Grand Caravan is a nameplate that has become synonymous with affordable, safe, and innovative family transportation.”

What will the 2021 Grand Caravan have to offer?
Additionally, the same source intimated that the Grand Caravan was more popular with buyers in Canada versus the sales in the United States. The Grand Caravan will not be pushing out Chrysler’s existing minivan platform, the Pacifica. Instead, the Grand Caravan will join the Pacifica, both in the Finch Chrysler showroom and in the factory.
The Chrysler Grand Caravan will share a few elements with its American Voyager sibling. Some of the common equipment and components will include the same naturally aspirated 3.6-litre, V-6 engine, nine-speed automatic transmission, and a maximum output of 287 horsepower. Chrysler will offer Canadian buyers two trim grades to consider, a base model and a more performance-themed SXT version. Some additional 2021 Grand Caravan highlights include:
- 1,633 kg (3,600 lb.) towing capacity
- 8.4 L/100 km highway fuel economy
- Available rear-seat entertainment system (SXT)
- Standard 177.8 mm (7-inch) touchscreen
